What to do with vacant retail space in Brooklyn?
The problem of what to do with vacant retail space is not new, but it has taken on new urgency in recent years as the number of vacant storefronts in major U.S. cities has increased. New York City is no exception, and the borough of Brooklyn is particularly hard hit.
Several factors have contributed to the increase in vacant retail space in Brooklyn. The most obvious is the rise in online shopping, which has decimated brick-and-mortar retail businesses across the country. But there are also other, more local factors at play.
Rising rents, for one, have made it difficult for small businesses to stay afloat. And the gentrification of once-gritty neighborhoods has led to the displacement of long-time businesses that can no longer afford the new, higher rents. So what can be done about all this vacant retail space in Brooklyn? There are a few possible solutions. One is to convert the space into residential.
