Artist Rap Chan hosts pop-up exhibition in Central Hong Kong with message of tenderness and wellbeing

PHong Kong artist and author Rap Chan, widely known by his creative identity Dustykid, hosted a pop-up exhibition in Central Hong Kong to share a message about kindness, tenderness and mental wellbeing.

The exhibition invited visitors to reflect on the importance of compassion and emotional resilience during a period when many communities were navigating social uncertainty and the lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through his distinctive illustrations and storytelling, Dustykid has built a large international audience across social media platforms and through his published books.

Temporary exhibitions like this demonstrate how pop-up spaces can provide artists with flexible venues to connect with audiences and share meaningful messages.

The Dustykid Creative Universe

Rap Chan was born and raised in Hong Kong and began creating the Dustykid character to express everyday emotions through simple but powerful illustrations.

His relatable cartoons, which he shares regularly on Facebook and Instagram, explore themes such as self-care, kindness, empathy and personal growth.

Over time, the project expanded into books and educational resources. Chan has published dozens of titles focused on emotional wellbeing and has developed tools such as flashcards and storybooks designed to help children develop healthy minds and positive habits.

Dustykid’s work has attracted global attention, resonating with readers of all ages who connect with the gentle messages behind the illustrations.

Using Pop-Up Exhibitions to Share a Message

The Hong Kong pop-up exhibition centred around the theme:

“Don’t forget the tenderness in your heart.”

The installation used Dustykid’s artwork to encourage visitors to reflect on kindness and empathy, particularly during periods of uncertainty and social change.

Speaking about the exhibition, Rap Chan explained:

“We wanted to remind people that despite everything happening around us, it’s important to keep tenderness in our hearts.”

For Chan, the Dustykid project has always focused on spreading positive messages.

“I started Dustykid to share ideas about mental health and the importance of being kind to others.”

By hosting the exhibition in a temporary retail space, the project was able to reach audiences in a highly accessible location while creating an intimate environment for visitors to experience the artwork.

Why Temporary Spaces Work for Artists

Pop-up exhibitions offer artists a flexible way to present their work, experiment with new ideas and connect directly with audiences.

Unlike traditional gallery spaces, short-term venues can be adapted quickly to suit different creative concepts and allow artists to reach audiences in high-traffic neighbourhoods.

For this project, the Dustykid team worked with Storefront to secure a space that suited the exhibition’s goals.

Rap Chan noted that the collaboration made the process straightforward:

“The space was perfect for what we needed. Working with Storefront was easy and the team helped us find the right location.”

Temporary exhibition spaces can be particularly valuable for creative projects that combine art, storytelling and community engagement.
