Melbourne: Australia's fashion and retail capital

Frequently topping the list of the world’s most livable cities, Melbourne has evolved into a vibrant, innovative premier global destination at the heart of Australia’s retail industry. Alive with a dynamic consumer economy, the city offers an exciting mix of international designer brands, world class department stores, flagship stores and a bustling community of local fashion retailers. The flourishing inner-city shopping strips and large suburban shopping facilities offer a range of retail locations suitable for a variety of stores and brands.

Melbourne has many modern retail complexes home to local and international retailers which, together with exciting historic sights, bustling laneways, luxury precincts and heritage markets, draw in shoppers and tourists alike. In fact, in the 12-month period up unto the end of 2016, Victoria’s inbound tourism numbers had risen by 9.6% to reach 2.5 million, with Chinese tourists leading the influx.

The city offers an innovative retail landscape that increasingly attracts numerous international brands as they make the city their first port of call when entering the Australian market. International retail giants like H&M, Topshop, Muji, Uniqlo, Sephora, JD Sport and New Balance have all made Melbourne their first Australian stop. By June 2017, Melbourne’s Central Business District’s retail core had grown to 137, while it is home to over 19.000 businesses, catering to more than 854.000 people. In the twelve months preceding June 2017, investment activity totaled to $274.8 million, with offshore investors accounting for 93% of total sales by value.

Fashion and shopping is at its best in Melbourne, making it the perfect location for your next pop-up ‘Down Under’.

Melbourne Central

Melbourne Central is a landmark office and retail location, situated right next to Melbourne Emporium and Bourke Street Mall. Surrounding the historic Shot Tower, Melbourne Central is home to 300+ specialty shops, generating $535 million in sales. It features an array of popular stores under the one roof. Fashion and accessory stores include Colette, Country Road, Mimco, Nike, RM Williams, and JD SPORT to name a few. Beauty stores include MAC, Sephora, Mecca Maxima and Innisfree.

The impressive shopping destination is conveniently located right above Melbourne Central station and covers two blocks. It’s right at the urban center and attracts a wide variety of customers including CBD workers (11%), tourists (16%), students (28%) and residents (45%) from the inner ring suburbs of Melbourne. This area is a shopper’s delight with a wide selection of retail hubs that offer a dizzying array of flagship stores, exclusive boutiques and international fashion houses.

With its many creative laneways, hidden boutiques, restaurants, hole-in-the-wall cafes and astonishing bars, there’s always something new to discover in Melbourne central which makes the area teem with energy.

Highpoint Shopping Centre

Just 8 kilometers northwest of Melbourne Central, is the famed Highpoint Shopping Centre in Maribyrnong. It’s one of Australia’s largest and fastest growing retail destinations and the second largest shopping center in the state of Victoria with over 500 stores offering the biggest and best choice for cosmetics, shoes, homeware, technology, designer fashion, accessories – all in the same place. It generates $1 billion in annual sales with approximately 16.7 million in yearly traffic.

The Highpoint Shopping Centre offers a compelling retail experience for its customers and is considered the prime retail, entertainment and lifestyle location in the western region of Melbourne. Tenants include Myer, David Jones, Aesop, Country Road, Chanel, Dior, Nike, Adidas, Target, Zara, Sephora, Lululemon Athletica, Apple, Samsung and many more.

Shoppers from all over are attracted by the center’s fresh approach to large scale shopping complexes, with a design that challenges existing retail conventions. After recent redevelopments, additional retail space has been added that sharply contrasts with typical rectangular mall arrangements. Instead of an inward-looking arrangement, the mall features a curving plan which creates views that unfold as shoppers walk through the space and natural daylight is incorporated to provide a meaningful customer experience.

Highpoint Shopping Centre is a true community gem, surrounded by sustainable landscaping designs that further deepen its ties with its western suburban clientele.
