Photo Shoot Space & Video Shoot Space for Rent in New York

New York is one of the world's most active markets for commercial photography, editorial work, and branded video production. This page covers every Photo Shooting Space Rental listed in New York on Storefront: daylight lofts, cyclorama studios, converted warehouses, and residential interiors available on short-term, flexible terms.

What is a photo shoot space or video shoot space?

A photo shoot space is a temporary venue adapted or purpose-built for photography and video production. In New York, that spans dedicated studio floors with seamless paper, open loft formats with floor-to-ceiling windows, industrial warehouses with exposed brick and raw concrete, and residential apartments used for lifestyle content.

A video shoot space requires higher ceiling clearance, controlled acoustics, and adequate power circuits for lighting rigs. Many listings on Storefront satisfy both disciplines simultaneously, which is why this page targets both photo and video production renters.

Who rents photo and video studios in New York?

Solo photographer or two-person crew

A session photographer, portrait specialist, or solo content creator typically needs 500 to 800 square feet, a backdrop system or seamless paper, and natural or continuous light. Ideal for headshots, lifestyle portraits, and Instagram or TikTok content. Neighborhoods such as Astoria and Williamsburg offer strong natural-light lofts at the lower end of the market.

Small production team (3 to 8 people)

Fashion lookbooks, e-commerce catalog shoots, and social media content campaigns usually involve a photographer, stylist, art director, and one or two talent. These teams need 800 to 1,500 square feet, a dressing area or green room, reliable wifi, and kitchen access for longer shoot days.

Large commercial production (9 or more people)

TV commercials, high-end editorial, and multi-day branded campaigns require significant square footage above 1,500 sq ft, loading dock or freight elevator access, three-phase power for HMI lighting, separate client and crew zones, and parking nearby. Weekly bookings at this scale start from $2,723 per week.

Video production specifics

Video shoot space in New York is a distinct market within the broader studio rental category, and the right space for a photography-only job may be wrong for a video production.

Key requirements for a video shoot space include:

• Acoustic isolation. Dialogue recording, ADR workflows, and any sync-sound production need walls that block ambient street noise. In Manhattan, that matters more than in outer-borough warehouse districts, where the buildings themselves provide natural isolation.

• Ceiling height. A standard photography studio at 10 to 12 feet works for still work. Video lighting rigs, especially HMI or large LED panels on overhead rigging, typically need 14 feet or more.

• Dedicated power. Three-phase or 60-amp circuits are standard on larger video productions. Confirm the supply before booking any space you plan to run large lighting rigs in.

• Cyclorama or green-screen walls. Cyclorama walls give an infinity cove for seamless backgrounds; green-screen walls open post-production compositing options. Both are available in the New York inventory but not universally: filter specifically for these features when searching.

• Post-production proximity. Some production teams prefer studios within a short drive of a post facility. The cluster of production infrastructure in Long Island City and the Garment District makes both practical bases for this.

Pricing for short-term photo studio rental in New York

Based on active listings on Storefront, typical asking rates for photo and video shoot spaces in New York are:

• Daily: $547 to $1,200 per day

• Weekly: $2,723 to $4,032 per week

• Monthly: $9,563 to $17,000 per month

Rates at the lower end of each range reflect smaller or outer-borough spaces. Manhattan studios in SoHo, Chelsea, and Tribeca sit toward the upper end of these ranges. Spaces in the Garment District and Hudson Yards offer larger floor plates at mid-range rates, often with freight access and easier parking than central SoHo.

Final rates depend on duration, exclusivity, and event timing. Pricing shown reflects typical asking ranges for spaces in the area; final booking terms are negotiated directly with the host.

Neighborhoods for photo and video shoots in New York

Neighborhood choice affects aesthetics, day rate, crew logistics, and travel time for talent.

SoHo and Tribeca

Cast-iron architecture, generous ceiling heights, and wide-plank wood floors. Greene Street and Wooster Street run through the core of SoHo's historic district and hold some of the tallest, widest ground-floor studio bays available in Manhattan. Preferred for high-end fashion editorial, luxury product, and commercial campaigns.

Chelsea

Clean white gallery interiors with controlled natural light. The blocks in the West 20s between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues concentrate the city's largest column-free floors, which suits minimalist fashion, beauty, and art-direction-heavy productions. Washington Street runs through the Meatpacking District at Chelsea's southern edge for larger-format, more industrial options.

Garment District

The historic center of the American apparel trade. Buildings on West 38th Street and West 39th Street are configured for wholesale and showroom use, which also makes them well suited to catalog shoots and sample-sale photography. Upper-floor spaces here often include freight elevators and wide loading bays.

Brooklyn: Williamsburg and Bushwick

Industrial warehouse lofts and raw concrete interiors. Lower day rates than Manhattan, excellent for editorial and street-adjacent content, and easier truck access for larger productions.

Queens: Astoria and Long Island City

Large floor plates at competitive rates. Long Island City has become a reliable base for production companies that need loading docks, three-phase power, and parking without Manhattan pricing.

The Hamptons

Seasonal option for summer lifestyle and outdoor content. Natural light, residential interiors, and outdoor settings make it the most visually distinct alternative to studio work. Bridgehampton and Southampton both list spaces for the summer window.

Logistical factors to check before booking

• Load-in access: Does the building have a freight elevator, loading dock, or ground-floor street access for equipment?

• Parking: Is there a nearby garage, or does the street allow production vehicles?

• Turnaround time: How much buffer is built into the booking between sessions? Is there an overlap risk with another group?

• Power supply: Is a standard 20-amp circuit sufficient, or does the shoot require 60-amp or three-phase service for HMIs?

• Noise and acoustics: Critical for any video shoot space where dialogue or ambient sound matters. Ask the host about street noise and whether the space has acoustic treatment.

• Kit-inclusive vs. bring your own gear: Some studios include strobes, C-stands, seamless paper, and backdrop systems. Others are bare rentals. The difference affects both your budget and your load-in time, so confirm the equipment list before booking.

Seasonal booking patterns for NYC photo and video shoots

Demand for photo shoot space and video shoot space in New York peaks in Q4 as brands complete holiday campaigns, and again around New York Fashion Week, which runs twice a year in February and September. Summer produces a secondary spike for lifestyle and outdoor-adjacent content, including Hamptons-based residential and outdoor shoots.

For Q4 and Fashion Week periods, booking 3 to 4 weeks in advance is advisable. Shoulder windows, particularly April through June, tend to offer more last-minute availability. August is the quietest month: studios are easier to book on short notice and rates are at their most negotiable, though the city's creative industry is largely out of town.

Short-term rental vs. signing a permanent studio lease

A short-term photo studio in New York costs more per day than a long-term lease but eliminates fixed overhead: no monthly rent when the studio sits dark between projects, no utilities contract, no build-out cost. For most freelance photographers and production companies running fewer than 15 shoot days per month, short-term rental is the lower total-cost option.

For context on the broader New York retail and creative space market, the Upper East Side Pop-Up Shops Guide: Where to Launch Retail in NYC (UES) and the Nolita, NoHo and Bowery Pop-Up Shop & Art Galleries Guide: Where to Launch in Downtown NYC cover adjacent neighborhoods where residential and gallery spaces frequently double as photo shoot venues.

FAQ

What is the difference between a photo shoot space and a video shoot space?

The terms overlap substantially. A video shoot space typically requires higher ceilings, controlled acoustics, and sufficient power for larger lighting rigs. Many New York studios accommodate both disciplines. Confirm ceiling height, power supply, and soundproofing with the host before booking.

How much does a short-term photo studio in New York cost?

Typical asking rates on Storefront run from $547 to $1,200 per day and $2,723 to $4,032 per week. Monthly rates start from $9,563. Rates vary by neighborhood, studio size, and included amenities. Final booking terms are negotiated directly with the host.

Where can I find lower-cost photo studios in New York?

Outer-borough neighborhoods, including Astoria, Long Island City, Williamsburg, and Bushwick, generally offer larger spaces at lower day rates than Manhattan. Many include loading dock access and parking, which reduces production logistics costs.

How far in advance should I book a photo or video studio in New York?

For peak periods, Q4 holiday campaigns and New York Fashion Week in February and September, book 3 to 4 weeks ahead. Outside peak periods, 1 to 2 weeks is usually sufficient. August and the weeks after the December holidays offer the most last-minute availability.

Do photo studios in New York include lighting and grip equipment?

Many do, but not all. Common inclusions are studio strobes, C-stands, seamless paper, and backdrop systems. Always confirm the equipment list directly with the host. Some spaces are bare-bones rentals where you bring your own gear, which affects both budget and load-in planning.

Can I rent a photo studio in New York for just a few hours?

Yes. Many listings offer half-day and hourly minimums, particularly for smaller spaces. Hourly rates are common for portrait and headshot sessions. Larger production spaces more often require a full-day minimum.
